Wow! Windows 7 get extended support until January 2023: The benefits and risks of using an old OS

A similar announcement was made by Google in October when the company said that version 110 of its Google Chrome web browser would also likely drop support for Windows 7 and 8.1 starting in February 2023.

The company will also be offering paid Windows 7 Extended Security Updates (ESU) on a per-device basis to all Windows 7 Professional and Enterprise customers in Volume Licensing.. The businesses using ESU will be able to get Extended Security Updates (ESUs) until January 2023, but keep in mind that the Windows 7 consumer products are not impacted by this change.

"With that in mind, today we are announcing that we will offer paid Windows 7 Extended Security Updates (ESU) through January 2023," writes Jared Spataro, Corporate Vice President for Office and Windows Marketing, in a blog post. "The Windows 7 ESU will be sold on a per-device basis and the price will increase each year. Windows 7 ESUs will be available to all Windows 7 Professional and Windows 7 Enterprise customers in Volume Licensing, with a discount to customers with Windows software assurance, Windows 10 Enterprise or Windows 10 Education subscriptions. In addition, Office 365 ProPlus will be supported on devices with active Windows 7 Extended Security Updates (ESU) through January 2023. This means that customers who purchase the Windows 7 ESU will be able to continue to run Office 365 ProPlus."

Key Visual Basic 6.0 runtime files, used in the majority of application scenarios, are shipping in and supported for the lifetime of supported Windows versions. This lifetime is five years of mainstream support and five years of extended support from the time that a given version of Windows ships. These files have been tested for compatibility as part of our testing of Visual Basic 6.0 applications running on supported Windows versions.

This extended list consists of key controls, libraries, and tools that are installed from the IDE media or from Microsoft.com to the developer machine. Typically, the VB6 IDE installed these controls to the developer machine by default. The developer still needs to redistribute these files with the application. The supported version of the files is available online on the Microsoft Download Center ( =142927).

Supporting and/or shipping Visual Basic 6.0 runtime binaries on supported Windows versions does not change the support policy for the Visual Basic 6.0 IDE or Visual Studio 6.0 IDE as a whole. Those products moved out of extended support on April 8, 2008.

Details on the support lifecycle of Microsoft products can be found at As a part of this support lifecycle, Microsoft will continue to support the Visual Basic 6.0 runtime on supported Windows versions for the support lifetime of those operating systems. This means, for example, that the Visual Basic 6.0 runtime will be supported on Windows Server 2003 until June, 2008 for Mainstream Support and June, 2013 for Extended Support. For more details on the support lifecycle or to find out about additional support options, please visit our support page at

Visual Basic for Applications, or VBA, is a distinct technology commonly used for application automation and macros inside of other applications, most commonly inside Microsoft Office applications. VBA ships as a part of Office and therefore the support for VBA is governed by the support policy of Office. However, there are situations where VBA is used to call or host Visual Basic 6.0 runtime binaries and controls. In these situations, Visual Basic 6.0 supported runtime files in the OS and the extended file list are also supported when used inside of a supported VBA environment.

Thanks Fiat. Knowing the extent of the change on 31/01/2023 will determine the route we have to take. If we can use bridging software to file VAT returns and the software lets up limp on for say a year beyond 2013 then QBO may then be a viable option, right now it is not. There is not enough time provided by Intuit to suitably support all clients to migrate to a new system. Thank you for your comment re using the US version. I'd be nervous of recommend that to my clients though as can imagine compatibility issues etc.

With Apple's expected release of a new macOS version next year, Big Sur will be the third oldest version and will cease to be supported next year. When this occurs, SCSCF will stop providing software support for all computers running macOS 11 Big Sur on November 30, 2023. 2ff7e9595c
